Huawei Watch GT Review: Hardy Smartwatches with Lots of FitnesFeatures

Huawei Watch GT Review: Hardy Smartwatches with Lots of Fitnes Features

All previous models of Huawei smart watches worked on Android Wear, which cannot be called the most successful for this class of devices. In any case, at the moment, primarily due to the very short battery life. Huawei decided to change the concept a bit and released the new model Huawei Watch GT with an emphasis on autonomy, which its own Lite OS and corresponding hardware, which was also developed by the company, should largely provide. This is the first smart watch on Lite OS. The basic concept differs from the competitors Samsung or Apple: Huawei Watch GT have certain functionality with an emphasis on fitness capabilities and there are no third-party applications for it, at least for now. The functionality of the Huawei Watch GT is not the most outstanding, but for a certain audience it will be more than enough. We'll see,

What is interesting about Huawei Watch GT?

Huawei Watch GT looks like a classic wrist watch with two mechanical buttons and a round AMOLED touchscreen display 1.39 inches, 454 points in diameter, pixel density of 326 ppi. The case is made of stainless steel, the bezel is ceramic, and the back cover is made of plastic. The watch is waterproof, promising up to 50 meters. The clock can count the number of steps taken, the time of activity per day, remind you that it is time to get up and warm up, track various types of workouts, count calories, measure your pulse, track sleep, and so on. Of course, business is not limited to fitness functions: Huawei Watch GT is equipped with a barometer, a compass module with support for GPS, GLONASS and Galileo to build accurate routes and are able to receive notifications from a smartphone. It all works on its own dual-core processor and Lite OS, the company claims That the watch can work up to 2 weeks without recharging with 1.5 hours of tracking workouts per week or up to 22 hours with constant tracking of the pulse and GPS position. It sounds promising.

What do they look like?

Visually, the Huawei Watch GT looks very solid and close to a classic wrist watch. Only the inactive black screen gives out their "smart" component. Activation - the usual movement of the wrist. Functions Always on Display is not for obvious reasons: it will significantly reduce battery life. The bezel is ceramic, and the main body is made of stainless steel with a "diamond-like coating (DLC technology)", as indicated on the website. The watches are medium in size, do not look massive, and the weight of 46 g is more than comfortable:
On the side there are two round metal buttons. They, together with the touch screen are used to control the clock. We will return to this issue in detail later:
The watch is waterproof, Huawei claims to withstand immersion to a depth of 50 meters. Moreover, among other things, they are designed for swimming and can track the SWOLF efficiency ratio. I am sure that regular visitors to the pools know what it is. The only point - it is not recommended to swim with a leather strap option, for this there is a silicone one. In the process of testing, the watch successfully survived several times a shower (I simply forgot to take it off) and there are absolutely no consequences.
The bottom panel is plastic, with contacts for the charger and an optical sensor for measuring the pulse:
The strap is removable, width 20 mm. A standard mount with a spring is used and, if desired, you can install any one you like from another manufacturer. Huawei (judging by the renderers) currently has three options. Black silicone, which comes with a black version of the Huawei Watch GT, black and yellow silicone and brown leather, which comes with a silver watch. It is this option that we have, it is interesting in that it consists of two parts: outside - the skin, inside - the silicone base:
The clasp is standard, as on a classic watch, it promises that it fits the hand with a wrist coverage of 14-21 cm:
Look and made Huawei Watch GT with high quality and soundly. The appearance is versatile and will fit any clothing, plus there are two color options. With convenience, everything is in order: weight, size and comfortable strap.

What about the screen and hardware stuffing?

The Huawei Watch GT got a round 1.39-inch AMOLED display (although it's more correct to say the diameter after all) with a resolution of 454x454, pixel density of 326 PPI. The screen is very high quality, with maximum viewing angles and a good margin of brightness. There is both a manual setting and a light sensor for automatic brightness adjustment. Now it is difficult to assess the behavior in the sun in view of the overcast weather, but I think that there should not be any problems with readability. Always on Display in the usual sense is missing, this is done to increase battery life. There is only an option when the screen does not turn off 5 minutes one time. He touch, with responsiveness all is well. There is a lock for swimming:
A set of various sensors and interfaces looks like this: there is an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, optical heart rate monitor, light sensor, barometer and GPS (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo global positioning systems are supported). The clock is connected to the smartphone via Bluetooth 4.2 LE. Wi-Fi and NFC modules are missing. Huawei Watch GT run on its own Lite OS, this is the first model on the new operating system. It was not for nothing that she received such a name: the developers were striving to make it maximum “light” and energy efficient. Yes, it is currently very functionally limited. On the other hand, everything you need is already there, and with updates you can certainly wait for additional chips. To understand how easy Lite OS turned out, you just have to look at the amount of clock memory: 8 MB of RAM and 128 MB of internal memory.

What with the interface, features and fitness capabilities?

The screen is activated either by the usual movement of the wrist, or any of the buttons. There are 11 preset dials of different types and functionality. Starting with the classic and ending with a pulse or weather forecast. Surely the company will periodically replenish their choice:
Horizontal movements across the screen switch widgets, so to speak. There are three of them: activity charts with three indicators. The number of steps per day, the time of activity and how many times the user got up from behind the desktop. Next - a screen with the current pulse, maximum, average, minimum value per day and a chart of its change. And the last widget is the weather.
With a familiar top-down movement, a curtain is displayed on which the battery charge, date, Bluetooth connection status, and five icons for quick launching a smartphone search, silent mode, screen lock, 5-minute screen activity and settings:
Bottom up opens a list of notifications. Opportunities to respond is not provided. At the bottom of the list there is a clear all button:
When an incoming call displays the name of the caller and the call end button:
The upper mechanical button opens the main menu, some functions duplicate widgets, but by moving upwards you can open more detailed information about the activity or pulse. Plus there are additional chips: information about sleep, barometer / altimeter, compass, stopwatch, alarm clock, flashlight, transition with a sports function and settings. In the settings there is the brightness of the screen, the inclusion of the "do not disturb" mode, the information about the clock reset and reset. In general, all the basic necessary functions are there, but something like Always on Display, a player (or just a remote control for the player’s smartphone), a remote for a smartphone’s camera would be very useful:
You can either go directly to the sports functions using the bottom button or from the main menu. From the training programs there are jogging on the street / treadmill, walking, climbing, swimming, bike / exercise bike. There are prepared programs for walking and running for various purposes:
In training mode, a lot of different indicators are monitored: pace, speed, pulse, distance, time, rise, SWOLF (efficiency with swims), maximum oxygen consumption VO2max and so on. The accuracy of the heart rate monitor at the level of modern flagship smart watches. The error is not more than 5%, which is normal for heart rate monitors of this type. Maximum accuracy can now be obtained only with chest models.
For synchronization, use the proprietary application Huawei Health. It receives all the information from the clock (steps, calories, sleep, route, and so on), displays information from the clock itself, serves to update the firmware and allows you to more flexibly adjust, including the ability to set its own and desired weight, desired pulse limits and so on. Of the interesting features there is the Google Fit ability to sync with Google Fit:
To monitor sleep, the Huawei TruSleep 2.0 algorithm developed in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Dynamic Biomarkers at Harvard Medical School is used. It is argued that the watch very accurately monitors the various phases of sleep, its quality, after which they can give tips on how to improve it. As for the alarm clock, in the Huawei Watch GT it did not help me in any way due to the weak vibration. Apparently this was done deliberately, but he simply did not wake me up even once.

What about charging and battery?

A magnetic charger is a small white “puck” with two pins and a USB Type-C connector on the side. The watch charges about an hour and a half from the company's fast memory for Huawei smartphones (I used the Huawei P20)
As I wrote above, Huawei promises 2 weeks of battery life, subject to continuous monitoring of the heart rate and 1.5 hours of recording workouts per week. Approximately the way I used. Only adjusted for hours 2-2.5 workouts and an abundance of notifications that I pour constantly. As a result, the clock lived 10 days. So 12-14 days to get quite real. An excellent indicator for smart watches, the new approach really worked and paid off.

The bottom line

Smart watches Huawei Watch GT turned out to be not quite familiar, but no less interesting for that. Manufacturers prefer to stuff the maximum number of functions into their smart watches, which significantly affects their autonomy. Huawei went the other way: the watch has all the necessary basic functions and plenty of opportunities for sports (mainly cardio exercises). Due to this, the Huawei Watch GT is really long on one battery charge: at least 10 days is guaranteed. They are well made, look stylish, protected from the ingress of water and suitable for swimming. Equipped with a very pleasant AMOLED-display and a full set of the most necessary sensors, including a heart rate monitor and GPS. If this set suits you, then you should take a closer look. If you are ready to charge another gadget more often, but you need a player, NFC,
